FREE GIFT or TAXABLE INCOME ?

Gifted, But Not Always Tax-Free: What UK Content Creators Should Know.

Free products, complimentary services, and sponsored trips can be exciting—but where they are connected to promotional work, they may also have tax implications.

When a Gift Becomes Business Income

Show a creator receiving a branded parcel to illustrate the connection between gifts and promotional work.

If a creator receives money, products or services in return for posting, reviewing or promoting a brand, their value can count as business income. This applies even when no cash changes hands.

A genuinely personal gift may be treated differently, so the circumstances and any agreement with the brand must be considered.

How Should Gifted Items Be Valued?

Use a product, hotel stay and price-tag graphic to demonstrate non-cash income.

HMRC states that gifts or services received instead of money should generally be valued at what they would have cost to purchase.

Creators should keep campaign agreements, emails, invoices and evidence of the item’s value. Accurate records make it easier to prepare accounts and explain the figures if HMRC asks questions.

Remember the £1,000 Threshold

Display cash, gifted products and services flowing into one total to explain how creator income is combined.

The £1,000 trading allowance applies to total gross trading income—not separately to each side hustle.

Cash payments, affiliate earnings and qualifying gifted items should therefore be considered together. When total trading income exceeds £1,000 during a tax year, the creator may need to notify HMRC and complete Self Assessment.

Better Records Create a Stronger Creator Business

Show an accountant reviewing a creator’s digital income records to highlight proactive financial planning.

Creator businesses are becoming more professional, and their accounting should develop accordingly. Recording gifted collaborations when they happen helps prevent unexpected tax bills and supports better pricing decisions.

At Ten Piece Limited, we help creators understand their income, identify allowable business expenses, and meet their reporting obligations with confidence.
